Prepare the outlines at their real size

Use closed outer contours for the pieces you want to arrange. If your pattern is only available as PDF, prepare the geometry in another tool first. PatternNest doesn't parse PDF sewing patterns or construct missing outlines.

Check a known measurement after import. The outline needs to include the seam allowance you intend to cut; PatternNest doesn't add it. Internal notches, labels and grainline arrows aren't carried into the layplan, so keep your original pattern for cutting and assembly.

Count what will actually be cut

1. Set the quantity for each piece and check whether you need identical copies or a mirrored pair.
2. Review the total piece count after adding copies and mirrored pieces. Five different shapes can still produce more than ten fabric pieces.
3. Set the usable fabric width and the direction rule for each piece. Use the one-way constraint when all pieces must keep the same orientation.
4. Run the calculation and inspect the arrangement. Check that the required pieces are present and their direction matches your pattern instructions.

Keep fold pieces separate from the estimate

Version 1 doesn't have a cut-on-fold layout mode. Prepare the full cutting outline outside PatternNest if you need to plan the unfolded piece. Simply adding two separate mirrored pieces doesn't create a joined fold piece.

The reported length belongs to the outlines and settings in this job. It doesn't add allowances for shrinkage or align a repeating print for you. Keep those requirements in your fabric purchase calculation.
