Open paths in CAM: choose a profile or repair a boundary

An open path is not automatically an error. The relevant question is whether the selected CAM operation needs a closed region or is intended to follow an open line.

Choose the operation before editing geometry

Vectric documents profiling open vectors on the left, right or directly on the line. Such paths can also be offset with a defined side. A pocket or another operation based on an enclosed region has different requirements. Check the operation in the documentation for your CAM version rather than treating every open-path warning as a request to join endpoints.

Repair only unintended gaps

If the part should be closed, inspect both endpoints and measure their separation. Join the intended segments on a copy using a tolerance just sufficient for that gap. Check nearby slots and separate parts afterwards. Bridging a large opening can change the design, while excessive tolerance can merge different contours.

Check the resulting toolpath

DXF Medic can report open contours and apply supported gap repairs. It does not determine your intended machining strategy or generate CAM toolpaths. Reimport the repaired geometry and inspect the selected side, compensation, entry and exit moves. For an intentionally open profile, retain the open geometry and verify the toolpath direction and clearance in CAM.
