Measure nesting savings using complete jobs

Compare the material needed to produce the same accepted parts. A smaller bounding rectangle or a high utilisation percentage may not reduce the number of sheets you buy.

Keep the comparison fair

Use identical part quantities, rotations, sheet sizes, usable margins and process clearances. Include holes and any restrictions imposed by grain, surface finish or clamping. Record preparation time and inspect the exported geometry in CAM. A layout that omits a part or cannot be cut with your chosen lead-ins is not a valid saving.

Separate area from purchase cost

For illustration, a job that uses four sheets at €40 costs €160 in stock. If a verified alternative uses three of those same sheets, stock cost becomes €120, a €40 difference. This example is arithmetic, not a measured NestForge result. If both layouts still require four sheets, the immediate sheet purchase is unchanged even when one leaves a larger usable remnant.

Record useful remnants and repeatability

Track remnant dimensions and whether they are actually used in later jobs. Compare several representative jobs, including the awkward one that rarely packs well. Save settings and inputs so a later software or process change can be checked against the same baseline. Published vendor percentages cannot tell you the result for your own mix of parts. Report your observed range and the jobs behind it, rather than turning one good layout into a general savings promise.

Try the same-parts sheet comparison

Our eight-panel acrylic example uses 0.54 m² on one sheet or 0.48 m² on two smaller sheets. Both layouts contain all eight parts. Download the project and exports to compare these stock choices yourself.
